STOP Crime at home and in the work
place
Discover how you can use proven technology to
protect your family home or workplace from Crime
We have all experienced some form of crime, if not
you will definitely know many people who have personally experienced the
crime in our country whether it be petty theft or violent crime.
There are many reasons for the crime in our
country, but this does not change the fact that we need to protect
ourselves from it. We cannot rely solely on our undermanned police force
to combat crime, we need to look out for ourselves and help the police
where we can.
Security Technology has come a long way and we can
use it to help keep ourselves safe in an ever increasing violent
society.
Have you noticed all the CCTV cameras popping up
everywhere, on our roads & shopping centers. These systems are put
in at huge expense but are necessary to combat crime.
We have been dealing with Digital
CCTV
systems for over 5 years and have the experience of installing many
systems, we have seen the direct benefits of using CCTV only days after
a systems is installed.
Over 5 years ago I came into contact with my first
digital CCTV system. Coming from the computer industry I was blown away
by the capabilities of these machines and how the use of these systems
could help stop crime, make life safer and solve many problems in the
workplace.
How Can CCTV Help You?
At Home
Houses get broken into all the time, use CCTV to
deter criminals and keep your home safe.
-
CCTV
will create a visible deterrent. Most thieves are not professionals
and will move on to an easier target if they could be caught and
identified on camera.
-
You
can record & view suspicious movements
-
If
you hear strange noises or dogs barking at night one of the most
dangerous things you can do is go outside to investigate instead
verify the problem using your CCTV system.
-
Dont
be caught by surprise by thieves, rather you surprise them.
-
Monitor
your perimeter for intruders.
-
Is
your maid stealing? all footage is recorded onto hard drive
allowing weeks worth of footage easy for you to do periodic
checkups.
-
Check
on your garden services
-
Log
into your cctv system via the internet and monitor your home from
work. Make sure everything is safe and as it should be.
-
Did
the electrician arrive?
-
Did
the maid leave early?
-
Are
the kids safe?
-
Screen
your visitors and see who is there.
-
Did
the armed response arrive when the alarm went off, how long did they
take?
-
Who
is vandalizing the fence at night?
-
In
the event you are robbed you can help the police identify the
criminals and apprehend them.
-
Most
insurance companies will reduce your premiums due to the extra
security installed.
Retail/Bussiness
Many businesses are using digital CCTV to monitor their premises to stop
theft, this applies to shops, factories and offices.
-
A digital CCTV system will pay for
itself.
-
You will be able to reduce your
shrinkage. In many instances digital cctv systems pay for them
selves in a short space of time.
-
Shoplifting is a common crime and cost
retail stores a lot of money. Digital CCTV will act as a deterrent
to would be thieves and if caught on camera a conviction is almost
guaranteed - just by showing the thief footage will usually
secure a confession.
-
Is money going missing from your tills?
Digital CCTV will stop this problem in its tracks
-
Keep a visual record of who comes in
and out of your business.
-
Keep your reception area safe,
criminals will think twice about entering if they know there are
cameras watching them.
-
Are you losing valuable working time to
idle staff? Digital CCTV is a brilliant management tool for staff
productivity, it will allow you to have total control over
staff.
-
In the event your business is robbed you
can help the police identify the criminals and apprehend them so
they will not have another chance.
-
Often your most trusted employees will
be on the take, this is because they gain trust and feel entitled.
CCTV will reduce this temptation.
-
Customers services can be improved by
watching how your employees interact with the customer, how were
they treated, how log did it take for them to be served?
-
Supplier Theft Your suppliers will
tell you they delivered 100 items at your receiving area but
actually only 70 were received. You can then go back and view the
CCTV footage and catch them red handed.
-
You can manage multiple locations at once by logging in
to your system at office B whilst sitting at office A.
What
You need to know to Install Your own CCTV System (DIY)
By
installing your own CCTV system you can save thousands of Rand off the
total cost of a system. Having years of experience we can guide you
through what to look for when setting up your cameras.
It
is not always practical or cost effective to install cameras in every
corner all over the place like a bank might. Rather one should look for
key areas to monitor.
At
Home
The
main entrance / exit is a good place to start ie The driveway gate and
the front door. By monitoring these you have covered the usual access
points and created a visible deterrent - along with warning signs on the
gate.
Next
one would look at the perimeter fence or boundaries and find obvious
easy access points, these places should be monitored. If it is possible
try to remove as much bush & vegetation as possible. This will
eliminate blind spots and hiding places.
The
trick is to try create a circle of protection, so that should an
intruder enter your property he would eventually have to cross the
vision of the camera somewhere, thereby alerting you. This would also
provide you with recorded footage of the intruder.
At
least one camera strategically positioned inside the house is also a
good idea. Should someone enter the house you would have a good close up
shot of the intruder. It would also help when looking out for the
kids/maid etc.
If
you have younger children a camera overlooking the pool could be a good
idea.
Retail/Shop
Again
entrance and exit areas are important to cover, this is where you can
get a good mug shot of everyone entering the premises.
Small
high value items are often the first things to go missing, these isles
or shelves should be covered.
The
receiving & dispatch bays are very important to monitor. In my
experience this is where a lot of goods go missing. Even in a warehouse environment
when one cannot always see what items are going out you can compare how
many boxes have gone out, to what the paperwork says should have gone
out.
It
is good practice to install a camera above the area where money is
handled. This will stop the temptation of employees having long fingers.
It also helps clear up discrepancies where the customer says one thing
and the employee says another.
How
it Works
A
digital surveillance system consists of a recording device which can be
a PC based system or an embedded system (a computer built with the sole
function of digital surveillance). This unit is usually networkable thus
allowing you to use any computer to log in and view your cameras. It
will also have a hard drive which will record the footage. One will fit
a the right size hard drive according to how may days of footage is
required. This unit is the core of a digital CCTV system and is called a
DVR - digital video recorder. Using the Embedded DVR system you will
connect this to you TV for viewing.
One
will then have the cameras which are mounted strategically around the
premises. Each camera will require power and video transmission. Powax
cable is usually used here. This cable has two power wires and a coaxial
cable for the video. When mounting cameras be sure to figure out how you
will get your cable back to the recorder (DVR - digital video
recorder). Power supplies will usually be mounted at the recorder.
There
are several types of cameras available and one should choose the correct
camera for the application. There are some very important factors to
consider when choosing a camera & positioning it.
-
What
is the lighting like. If there is no light and infra red camera can
be used. This has the effect of a torch being shon on the subject,
but is not visible to the eye. Otherwise a day/night camera can be
used, this camera will switch to black & white mode when it gets
dark. Black & White images are better in the dark than colour
images.
-
A camera should not look into directly
into strong light from a dark area. This should be avoided where
possible as it can cause a bad glare and the picture will have a
white out effect.
Once
the DVR and cameras are installed you will have a working surveillance
system. Now for the bells and whistles. In order to view the cameras
remotely you will need to set the DVR up onto a network, this is relatively
easy and only requires basic IT knowledge. If you are not comfortable
doing this any IT technician would be able to help. We also have
extensive experience with these setup procedures and can help over the
telephone or come out and do the final setup for you.
In
order to view cameras over the internet you will need a decent - always on
internet connection. ADSL or Iburst have been tested and used. What this
does is allows an incoming connection to your DVR (digital video
recorder)and it will send the
images over the internet to your computer. There is some basic
configuration to be done on the ADSL router, namely port forwarding and
DynDNS.
There are free resources on the internet that will tell you step by step
how to configure these.
Once
this is done your system will be ready for use. All systems come with a
manual and its as easy as programming your video machine.
